American Gods Audiobook Contest Leaderboard

For those of you paying any attention to the Neil Gaiman "American Gods" Audiobook contest (that I happen to be a contestant in) here's the leader board starting 4/17/11. I will try to update this list daily, if time permits.

*Updated 10:30am 4/19 I wouldn't complain if you guys threw me a sympathy vote now and again for my hard work... ;)
*Updated 5:45pm 4/19
*Updated 10:40am 4/20 (Removed anyone that wasn't at at least 75)
Updated 12:35pm 4/21 (Removed Honorable Mentions) With the list being as accurate as it has been, people can check that for their viewing pleasure. All people noted with "Congrats" made a leap of 100 votes or more since yesterday. Well done, guys! I will post a separate blog post at the end of the competition of Honorable Mentions. Good luck, everyone!

Thanks go to Aneel for coming up with an automated system! If for some reason I am not updating fast enough, you can check the list below (which contains ALL submissions and updates almost hourly) and if that list doesn't seem right, you can keep an eye on the numbers above. Because the list below is not a thinking person, it can be faulty, so I will keep manually updating as well. Thanks again Aneel!

  1. Thanks so much for doing this! It's been such a pain in the ass obsessviely checking and trying to count how many people had more votes than me! Much love and good luck in the contest!

  2. Thanks Stephanie! I agree, I was getting UBER pissed trying to keep track and I figure all of us could use this. Are you in as well? If so, good luck to you also!

  5. Yeah, I'm smtlibrary - 25th place right now. So close - and yet so far! If only they'd take the top 30 or even 50! I mean, 1000 people (ish) have entered! And I live in a really small town - hard to compete with anyone living in NYC or LA!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I live in Janesville, WI. I can SO sympathize with you!!

  7. Bravo and thank you! This is marvelous, and I'm sure no small amount of work. You have my gratitude. And good luck in the contest!

  9. Glad you guys like it. It takes about an hour to update each time. Good luck to you all!

  10. It is honestly so disapointing that only Americans can enter...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Tara- They have said that if the attention is enough for this one, they'll do a UK one as well. Check Neil's blog for the info.

  12. Thanks so much for doing this! I bet it is really time consuming. I too am not in the big city, but I've been able to at least stay in the top 30. I'm currently 50 votes away from being top 20. This is gonna be tough.

Thanks again! You are the highest caliber of awesomeness for doing this!

  15. I'll try to keep it updated a few times a day if possible. This helps me as much as it helps you guys, so I am really happy someone finds it as useful as I do! Much love!

  16. Hey Naomi,
Thanks for going through all the trouble. This will make it much easier to follow for the next couple of weeks. Best of luck in the competition and I hope keep yourself solidly in the top twenty.

  17. Thanks so much Andrew and good luck to you!! Think of this as my good deed for the month. ;)

  18. Thanks! ... And I will need a miracle to get from my current measly 13 votes to over 300 to be in the top 20. XP

  19. Yeah. Definitely easier to check on here. lol. Thank you for going through all the trouble! Looks like I better step up my game! Spent a few days giving my friends a break from me bothering them all for votes. lol.

    Take care!

  21. Thanks so much for doing this! And, good luck to both of us! I'm in the honorable mentions right now. I'm not sure if you were referring to me (fjordstone) when you mention the 100 votes in a few hours; I'm up to 98 after a day and a half, but they were all gotten legitimately, from my friends who went over to listen and vote for me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Amy- Nope, not you. You have made regular steps ahead like everyone else has. Only one person made that kind of incredibly leap and it bumped them WAY up in the list.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey, thanks a ton, Naomi. I really appreciate this. Now I can satisfy my obsession with how well/poorly I'm doing, instantly.

    Best of luck to everyone!

  24. I was wondering the same thing.

  25. Hey, Naomi. Thanks for obsessing over this so we can all obsess with you! I'm not in the contest, but one of my bestest friends is. Clarissa (cnovales).

As a musician, I've been in several of these online voting things, and they're always seems a way to "pad" the results. I find it super curious that the people in the lead have like 5 comments on their submission page, whereas people further down the list have way more.

Oh, well. There's always going to be somebody that bends the rules, I suppose.

    Best of luck to all!

  26. @Bill- Yeah, I found that REALLY odd as well. I know that you can vote five times from the same IP address, but I am too nervous to have my fiance even vote for me because I don't want it to disqualify me. I am playing it EXTREMELY safe. I am just honored to be in the top 20 right now.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Naomi, let's hope that Bookperk will look for duplicate IP addresses and other forms of fraud when the contest closes. The fact that you have to register makes it harder to simply proxy surf and vote for yourself a billion times. I'd really like to see 20 actually talented readers/actors legitimately make it to round 2!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hope I fall into the "talented" category. I just doubt everything I do in life, so I probably did better than I thought. Heh.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I listened to yours, and you sound lovely, Naomi! Very different type of voice from mine. I guess it's all down to votes, and what Neil is looking for...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you so much! Yours was very engaging. I like how you whispered in parts of it. It drew me further into the story you were telling.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Naomi,

Yes, thank you for doing this. I am in the contest as well, and I was excited to see how many talented people that this drew in...and how many of them are Neil Gaiman fans...:-) I appreciate your time and effort in keeping "tabs" for us all!

    Best of luck!
    Lisa

  32. Naomi -
Where's your tip jar?! I don't know whether to be more appreciative of your list, your reading, or your political commentary! My sweetheart is also in the contest (arikaesca) - thanks from us both for the labors of love. Keep giving 'em hell in Wisconsin - there are a lot of us around the country rooting for you.

    - James

  33. Oh my goodness, thank you James! You just covered what all my love and energy have been about lately. This contest is meant to be my escape and I am hoping that good karma is surrounding me enough to help me along. Good luck to your sweetheart!

  34. Thanks so much for posting this!! I am also in the contest, but shy of the top 20. What a great opportunity, best of luck to everyone!

    It should update hourly.

  39. Thanks muchly for the leaderboard!

I'm surprised to be as high up as I have gotten, this was a really nice surprise!!!

    (AnjiBeast for anyone who cares)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey thanks for the leaderboard Naomi! Did you see Aneel's post above? Looks like you don't need to manually count anymore. ;)

Does anybody else think it's funny that a few leaders have a ton of students? That's freaking adorable. And I can't help wonder if those students are getting extra credit. Hahahah.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my goodness! That makes my life SO much easier! However, because Google will find this site when people search for the leaderboard, I'll keep updating anyway, but reference that site for people who need an in between kind of count. This site has better conversation anyway, I think. :D

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't think that loath.org app that grabs the standings works; I've got 150 votes as of right now, and I'm not showing up on the standings at ALL. Something's wonky there...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Amy, what's your username? Aneel can take a look at the code.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Amy's username is Fjordstone, but the site looks updated now. I am going to continue to update here as well, like I said.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Please do keep updating. The script is just grabbing the raw numbers, and it's a little fragile. This morning, the bookperk site had some (deleted?) entries that didn't have "Next" or "Previous" links, and that was making the script stop before it had seen all of the entries. It's good to have a thinking person look at the numbers and judge whether they look right. There's contact information at the bottom of the latest page, if you notice something wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I see fjordstone listed with 150. Is that you?

I do know that some of the links on the bookperk site broke for a while which caused the script to break. However, it looks like they've repaired things.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Where might I find a script like the one your friend has so I might add it here?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I want to add the widget/html thing that Age of Reason has her her page to the bottom of my list, if possible so people can look through that one as well if they want. Would I need to check your site for the updates each hour and link it again or will it do that on its own?

    ReplyDelete

  50. Hi Naomi, been meaning to say this for a couple of days: thanks so much for your leaderboard. I know you don't need to do manual updates anymore, but it helped when I woke up this morning and Aneel's script was broken! (Thanks also to Aneel!)

Seeing how close I was really pushed me to start properly bugging my friends to vote. Hopefully they don't all hate me now, hahaha! I always feel really awkward doing this kind of PR. Another 11 days? Yeesh, I wonder how many friends I can annoy between now and then.

    Good luck, and thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Melissa- you are a goddess! I owe you one!

@Mormolyke- Thank so much! I have added Aneel's script to this page so that they can be looked at at the same place/same time. This way if Aneel's list is weird, you can refer to mine. I plan to keep updating as programs can be faulty. Always good to have two sources. As for me, I intend to annoy them until they hate me. ;) Best of luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi Naomi. I've changed the text color that the script produces so that it's readable against both black and white backgrounds. Let me know if there are changes that would make it more useful.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It looks WONDERFUL! Thank you so very much!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks, @Age of Reason, I do see my user name there now (fjordstone). It wasn't there when I checked several times this morning, though!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you so much for doing this!! And for making the update so frequent! Very good luck to everyone in the contest. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. @Naomi, not a problem.
@Amy, I'm glad it was only a temporary problem. :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks again for doing this!

  58. Looks like there's now a leaderboard on the Bookperk site.

    ReplyDelete
  59. (Maybe that's old news, but I didn't know about it until they emailed me today to remind me to vote)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Uhhh, yeah had no idea. Would have been nice for them to start off with one...

    ReplyDelete
  61. I found it, but it doesn't look like they update nearly as often as myself or your script do. Plus, it was a pain in the butt to find. I never got an email about it...

    ReplyDelete
  62. The Bookperk site has gotten a lot slower and is now returning numerous errors. I'm going to reduce the frequency of updates to every 6 hours to lighten their load.

    ReplyDelete
  63. THank you so much for making this. So helpful and sooooo much easier. Best of luck to you! xo

    ReplyDelete
  64. If you're interested in looking at how the votes have added up over time, I've added historical data in TSV, suitable for looking at in a spreadsheet. I've also put that data into Google Docs and made some graphs. Unfortunately, the graphs don't update automatically when new data is collected.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hey Naomi, just checking in. Haven't seen an update in a few days. I hope all is well!

    ReplyDelete
  66. It was a ridiculous busy weekend, and now that I am dropping in the leaderboard every day I just get bummed out. Will do another proper update in the morning though. Thanks for wondering! :)

Thank you also for the files, I am checking those out now. :D

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yes! Thank you for the leader board. I had voters tell ME about it! I am slightly concerned that I have ten+ people voting from my office but we only have 2 computers. Most people use my computer to vote bc I always have the page open. They didn't register at my computer but they vote there. I hope they don't disqualify me for that. I too am very nervous about them thinking I am stuffing the box. I've never stuffed anything!
